William Pengelly (1812–94)

Mathematical tutor and geologist. An expert on the geology of Devon; explored the plant-bearing deposits at Bovey Tracey, and at Brixham Cave and Kent’s Hole, Torquay. Honorary secretary of the Torquay Natural History Society, 1851–90. President of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science, and Art, 1867–8. FRS 1863.
