Clergyman and astronomer. Headmaster, 1834–62, of Clapham Grammar School, where he established an observatory. Hulsean Lecturer, Cambridge University, 1867. Savilian Professor of astronomy, Oxford University, 1870–93. President of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1866–8. FRS 1840.
