Adam Afzelius (1750–1837)

Swedish botanist. Visited England in 1789. Undertook exploring expeditions to Sierra Leone, acting as botanist for the Sierra Leone Company, 1792–3 and 1794–6. In Africa, he formed natural history and ethnographical collections that were later acquired by Uppsala University. Returning to Sweden, became lecturer in botany, Uppsala, 1803–5; acting professor of materia medica and dietetics, 1812.
