John Ralfs (1807–90)

Surgeon and botanist. Gave up medical practice because of ill health. Resided in Penzance, Cornwall, where he pursued his botanical researches, specialising in freshwater algae, 1837–90. After suffering financial losses, he was provided with an annuity from a relief fund set up by Thomas Henry Huxley and Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1858.
