Translator and magazine editor. Familiar with British and European literary circles. Translated Alexis de Toqueville’s De la démocracie en Amérique (1835, 1840). Leader writer and foreigh correspondent to The Times, 1840–55. Editor of the Edinburgh Review, 1855–95.
