William Barton Rogers (1804–82)

American geologist. Professor of natural philosophy, University of Virginia, 1835–53. Appointed state geologist for the Geological Survey of Virginia, 1835. Established the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1861; president, 1862–70 and 1878–81. Brother of Henry Darwin Rogers.
