German-born botanist and physician. Practised medicine in Prague. Curator of the botanical collections of the Academy of Sciences at St Petersburg, 1839; assistant director, St Petersburg botanical gardens, 1851–5; director, botanical museum of the academy, 1855; professor of botany at the Paedagogium, St Petersburg, 1855–9.
