John William Salter (1820–69)

Geologist and palaeontologist. Apprenticed to James de Carle Sowerby in 1835. Assistant to Adam Sedgwick, 1842–6. Assistant to Edward Forbes on the Geological Survey of Great Britain, 1846; palaeontologist to the survey, 1854–63.
