Wilhelm Philipp Schimper (1808–80)

Alsatian bryologist and palaeontologist. Assistant in the geological section of the Museum of Natural History, University of Strasbourg, from 1835; director, 1866–80. Professor of geology and palaeontology, University of Strasbourg, 1872–9. Specialist in European mosses and fossil flora.
