Scholar, politician, and maritime judge. Camden Reader in ancient history, University of Oxford, 1773–85. George III’s advocate-general, 1788; judge of the High Court of the Admiralty, 1798–1828. MP for Downton, 1784 and 1790; for Oxford University, 1801–21. Knighted, 1788; created Baron Stowell of Stowell Park, 1821.
