Jacob Bigelow (1786–1879)

American botanist and physician. Professor of materia medica, Harvard Medical School, 1815–55; Rumford Professor of the application of science to the useful arts, 1816–27. President, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1847–63. Published extensively on botany, medicine, and technology.
