John Hanning Speke (1827–64)

Explorer of Africa. Army officer in India, 1844–54. Explored Equatorial East Africa, 1855–63, and discovered Lake Victoria Nyanza, one of the sources of the Nile. Published Journal of the discovery of the Nile in 1863. Awarded founders’ medal of the Royal Geographical Society, 1863.
