Egyptologist and archaeologist. Assistant in the department of antiquities in the British Museum, 1836; assistant keeper, 1844; keeper of the oriental, British, and medieval antiquities, 1861; keeper of oriental antiquities, 1866. Translator of classical Chinese and Egyptian texts.
