John Stenhouse (1809–80)

Scottish chemist. Studied chemistry at the Universities of Glasgow and Geissen. Lecturer on chemistry at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, 1851–7. Assayer to the Royal Mint, 1865–70. Patented inventions for dyeing, tanning, and sugar manufacture. Especially noted for developing a charcoal air-filter. FRS 1848.
