Scottish surgeon and botanist. MD, Glasgow, 1853. Assistant surgeon, Bengal, 1856; surgeon, 1867. Superintendent, Botanic Garden, Saharanpur, India, 1860–1, 1864–9. Conservator of Forests, Punjab, 1864–9. Prepared a forest flora of northern and central India at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 1869–72.
