Charles Warren Stoddard (1843–1909)

American poet and travel writer. Travelled to Hawaii, 1864, Tahiti, 1870, Europe and the Middle East, 1873–7. Converted to Roman Catholism, 1867. Wrote poetry and travel columns for newspapers. Taught English literature at Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885–6; taught literature at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC, 1889–1902.
