M.P. for St Mawes, Cornwall, 1808–12; Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1812–15; Staffordshire, 1815–20. Entered the House of Lords as Baron Gower, 1826. Succeeded to the dukedom, 1833. Lord lieutenant of Sutherland, 1831–61; of Shropshire, 1839–45.
