John Vaughan Thompson (1779–1847)

Zoologist and army surgeon. Surgeon with the British army, 1799–1816, including postings in the West Indies and Madagascar. Surgeon to the forces in Cork, Ireland, and later deputy inspector-general of hospitals, 1816–35. Medical officer in charge of the convict settlements of New South Wales, Australia, 1835–47. Studied Polyzoa, Cirripedia, and Crustacea. Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, 1810.
