John Tomes (1815–95)
Dental surgeon. Practised at Mortimer Street, London, from 1840. Dental surgeon, King’s College Hospital, 1840–3; Middlesex Hospital, 1843–74. Studied the histology of bone and dental tissues. Persuaded the Royal College of Surgeons to institute a licence in dental surgery in 1858. Published System of dental surgery (1859). Retired in 1876. Knighted, 1886. FRS 1850.
