Anatomist and administrator. Senior demonstrator to John Goodsir, professor of anatomy, University of Edinburgh, 1854–67; professor of anatomy, 1867–1916; principal, 1903–16. Published papers on anthropology and comparative anatomy from 1854. Knighted, 1886. FRS 1877.
