Edward Burnett Tylor (1832–1917)

Anthropologist. Educated at the School of the Society of Friends, Grove House, Tottenham. Author of Primitive culture (1871). Keeper of Oxford University Museum, 1883; reader in anthropology, Oxford University, 1883; professor, 1896; professor emeritus, 1909. President of the Anthropological Society, 1879–80, 1891–2. Helped to establish anthropology as a legitimate field of scientific enquiry. Knighted, 1912. FRS 1871.
