Electrical engineer. Secretary, London Electrical Society, 1843. Editor of Electrical Magazine, 1845–6. Electrician to the South-Eastern Railway Company, 1845–82. Instrumental in the development of submarine telegraphy. Member of the British Meteorological Society, 1850; secretary, 1857–64; president, 1869–70. FRS 1855.
