William James Lloyd Wharton (1843–1905)

Naval officer and hydrographer. Entered the navy in 1857; commander, 1872; captain, 1880; hydrographer, 1884. Published Hydrographical surveying (1882), which became the standard textbook on the subject. Knighted, 1895.
