Politician. Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1846. President of the Board of Control, 1852. First lord of the Admiralty, 1855. Secretary of state for India, 1859–66. Lord privy seal in William Ewart Gladstone’s cabinet, 1870–4. Created 1st Viscount Halifax in 1866.
