Joseph Wright (1734–97)

Painter. Known as Wright of Derby. Known particularly for his use of strong effects of light and shade, his most famous paintings being those of figures illuminated by artificial light. A friend of Josiah Wedgwood I and Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802).
