Joanna Maria Bonham Carter (1827–1884)

Daughter of William Smith MP and his wife, Frances, of Parndon Hall, Essex; Florence Nightingale’s mother, Frances, was her sister. Married John Carter (1788–1838), Whig MP for Portsmouth, 1817–38, in 1816; he took the surname Bonham Carter in 1827. Family friend of the Darwins. Resided at Ravensbourne Lodge, Keston, two miles north-west of Down, Kent, from 1853; moved to Keston House by 1862.
