Ignacy Domeyko (1802–89)

Lithuanian-born Polish geologist, mineralogist, and ethnographer. Graduated from Vilnius University in 1822. Student in Paris, 1832–6; graduated in mining engineering, Ecole des Mines, in 1837. Professor of mineralogy and chemistry, La Serena College, Coquimbo, Chile, 1838–46. Rector, University of Chile, Santiago, four times between 1867 and 1883.
