John Fairfax (1804–77)

English-born Australian newspaper publisher and businessman. Emigrated to Australia from Leamington after becoming insolvent in 1838. Librarian, Australian Subscription Library, Sydney, 1839. Co-owner, Sydney Herald, 1841. Director, Australian Mutual Provident Society, by 1851; of several other businesses, mostly in banking and insurance. Deacon, Pitt Street Congregational Church.
