James Fergusson (1808–86)

Scottish writer on architecture and India merchant. Established a successful indigo factory in India, retiring after about ten years. Travelled widely in India and published many works on its architecture. General manager of the Crystal Palace Company, 1856–8. Member of the Royal Commission inquiring into the defences of Britain, 1857. Inspector of public buildings and monuments at the Office of Public Works, 1869.
