Heinrich Gätke (1814–97)

German ornithologist. After working as a merchant and a painter, moved to Helgoland where he became a government secretary. Self-taught as an ornithologist, his publications drew attention to Helgoland (in the North Sea) as a centre of bird migration. The Prussian government purchased his bird collection in 1891 for the North Sea museum of the Biological Institute.
