James Gilchrist (1813/14–85)

Scottish physician. Apprenticed to a draper, then trained for the Presbyterian ministry, but had to abandon his studies due to ill health. MD, Edinburgh, 1850. Assistant, Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries; medical superintendent, Royal Lunatic Asylum, Montrose, 1853–7; medical superintendent, Crichton Royal Institution and Southern Counties Asylum, 1857–79. Member of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh and president of the Dumfries Field Club.
