Samuel White Baker (1821–93)

Traveller, sportsman, and author. Established an English colony in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), where he lived for nine years. Explored the tributaries of the Nile, 1861–5. Served as governor-general, under the Egyptian government, of the equatorial Nile basin, 1869–73. Knighted, 1866. FRS 1869.
