Bret Harte (1836–1902)

American novelist and poet. Worked for a weekly newspaper in Union, the Northern Californian, 1857–60; run out of town for criticising the massacre of Native Americans in an editorial. Wrote for the Golden Era, in San Francisco, 1860–4; co-editor of the Californian from 1864. Editor-in-chief of the Overland Monthly from 1868. Moved to Boston, 1871. Appointed commercial agent in Krefeld, Germany, 1877; Glasgow, 1880–85. Lived in London, 1885–1902.
