Johann Friedrich von Brandt (1802–79)
German zoologist and palaeontologist. Studied medicine at the University of Berlin, 1821–6. Taught medical botany and pharmacology there, 1829–31. Appointed to the Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg, 1831; director of the Zoological Museum until 1879. Professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the Medical Surgical Academy, St Petersburg, 1851–69.
