Joseph Kay (1821–78)

Economist and lawyer. BA (Trinity College), Cambridge, 1845; MA, 1849. Admitted at the Inner Temple, 1844; called to the bar, 1848. Travelled in Europe as a travelling bachelor of Trinity College from 1845. Judge of the Salford hundred court from 1862. QC, 1869. Solicitor-general, county palatine of Durham from 1872. Wrote works in favour of free trade in land.
