George Washington Bates (fl. 1850s)

American missionary and author. Published a record of travels through Hawaiian Islands under the pen name ‘A Häolé’ (1854). Contemporaries suggested George Washington Bates was the pseudonym of William Baker, tried for bigamy in New York in 1854 and sentenced to three years in Sing Sing.
