Laura Dewey Bridgman (1829–89)

American educator. Left deaf and blind after an attack of scarlet fever as a child; the first person with these disabilities to receive formal education. Studied at Perkins School for the Blind from 1837. After a brief period away from the school, returned and spent the rest of her life there; taught sewing, kept a journal, and wrote poetry.
