John McNeill (1795–1883)
Diplomat and surgeon. MD, Edinburgh, 1814. Assistant surgeon to the East India Company, Bombay, 1816; surgeon, 1824; in medical charge at the East India Company’s legation in Persia, and later political assistant to the envoy, 1824–35; retired in 1836. Envoy to Persia, 1836–42. Chairman of the Board of Supervision of the Scottish Poor Law Act, 1845–78. Commissioner, with Alexander Murray Tulloch, investigating the conduct of the Crimean campaign, 1855. Privy councillor, 1857. Knighted, 1839.
