Botanist and educator. BA, chemistry, London University, 1857. Principal, Shaw College, Grahamstown, South Africa, 1862. Science master, Gill College, Somerset East, 1869–81. Professor of botany at the South African College, 1881–9; director of Cape Town Botanic Garden, 1881–92; curator of Cape Government Herbarium, 1881–1905. Government botanist, 1892–1905. Founder and secretary of the South African Botanical Exchange Society.
