George Perkins Marsh (1801–82)

American scholar, politician, and diplomat. Whig Congress representative for Vermont from 1843. Instrumental in building up the funding for the Library of Congress and in the foundation of the Smithsonian Institution. US minister to Turkey, 1849–54, and to Italy, 1861–82.
