Joseph Milligan (1807–84)
Scottish-born surgeon and naturalist in Australia. Surgeon (afterwards surgeon-superintendent), Van Diemen’s Land Co., Surrey Hills, Tasmania, 1830–42. Inspector of convict discipline, 1842–3. Superintendent of Aboriginals and medical officer, 1843–46 and 1847–55. Made a study of Aboriginal languages. Surveyed the territory for mineral resources. Chairman of the Douglas River Coal Mining Co., 1855. Secretary to the Royal Society of Van Diemen’s Land, 1848–60. Returned to England in 1860; commissioner for Tasmania at the Great Exhibition, 1862. Fellow of the Linnean Society, 1850.
