John Milton (1820–80)

Accountant. Attended King’s College, London. Clerk at the War Office from 1840; assistant accountant general, 1860; accountant general of the Army, 1871. Commissioner of income tax, 1871–5. Nephew of Fanny Trollope (ODNB), and reader of manuscripts for the John Murray publishing house. Knighted, 1878.
