Louis Laurent Marie Gabriel (Gabriel) de Mortillet (1821–98)

French archaeologist. Co-discoverer of a Neolithic settlement at Lake Varese, Italy, 1858. Founded the journal Matériaux pour l’histoire primitive et philosophie de l’homme, 1864. Worked at the museum of national antiquities from 1868. Professor of prehistoric anthropology, School of Anthropology, Paris, 1876–98. Created a chronological classification system of the prehistoric cultural development of humans.
