German zoologist and surgeon. Professor of zoology and palaeontology, Heidelberg University, from 1863. Director of the Zoological Institute, Heidelberg. Director of the Natural History Museum, Hamburg, 1882. Author of Allgemeine Zoologie (1875–81).
