Jean Jacques Elisée (Elisée) Reclus (1830–1905)
French geographer and anarchist. Travelled in the British Isles, the United States, Central America, and Colombia, 1852–7. Served in the National Guard during the siege of Paris, 1870–1; supported the Commune, as a result of which he was banished from France, 1872. Settled in Switzerland, where he wrote La nouvelle géographie universelle, la terre et les hommes (1875–94). Initiated the Anti-Marriage Movement in 1882. Professor of comparative geography, Brussels, from 1892.
