James Wheeler Woodford Birch (1826–75)

Colonial official. Beginning in 1846, held posts in different districts of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), including that of writer, commissioner of requests, police magistrate, assistant government agent, and district judge. Colonial secretary, Singapore, 1870. British resident at the court of the Malay sultan of Perak. Assassinated in Perak, Malaya, in 1875.
