Ludwig Karl Schmarda (1819–1908)
Austrian naturalist and traveller. Studied medicine at Olmütz, Moravia; natural science at Vienna. DPhil 1841; MD 1843. Professor of natural history, and founder and director of the Zoological Museum, Graz, 1850. Professor of zoology, Prague, 1852. Made several scientific voyages from 1853 to 1857 and after his retirement. Professor of zoology, Vienna, 1862–83. Worked primarily on the geographical distribution of animals.
