William Henry Sleeman (1788–1856)

Army officer and administrator. Lieutenant, Bengal army, 1814; captain, 1825; major, 1837; lieutenant-colonel, 1843; colonel, 1853; major-general, 1854. Magistrate in central India, 1825–35. Head of a commission for the suppression of thuggee and dacoity, 1839–42. Resident of Lucknow, 1848.
