Jacob W. Velie (1829–1908)

Curator. Moved from New York to Rock Island, Illinois, where he had a dental practice, 1856. Assistant, Chicago Academy of Sciences, 1871; secretary and curator, 1872. Made several field trips throughout America to replenish the natural historical collection lost in the fire of 1871.
