James Braid (1795–1860)

Scottish surgeon and hypnotist. Practised medicine in Manchester from 1828. Coined the term "hypnotism", which he defined as a nervous state involving changes in blood circulation to the brain. Incorporated hypnotism into his medical practice and published a number of related articles and pamphlets.
